Following a barrage of international condemnations by Western democracies, continental and regional bodies as well as numerous human rights organizations of the brutal crackdown of UDP demonstrators , resulting to allegations of deaths and disappearances, The Gambia government in a jittery mood, arraigned United Democratic Party leader, Ousainou Darboe and 37 others who all appeared in two batches before Justice O. Ottada of the Banjul High Court.

Lawyer Darboe and co-accused first appeared yesterday, returned to court late this afternoon for a scheduled bail hearing but no bail was granted due to legal bureaucratic procedures. They have returned to the scandalous Remand Wing of the Mile II State Prisons notorious for its torture culture and poisoning of political prisoners.

Our correspondent covering the hearing says all accused appear alert and united in their doggedness that the demonstrations were just. As defence attorney Antouman Gaye was making his bail applications, our reporter heard that unless the missing five UDP supporters including  Ebrima Solo Sandeng, Fatoumata Jawara and Nogoi Njie peaceful demonstrators of the first batch appeared in court, the remanded party leadership was not accepting bail.

Our correspondent, quoting Justice ministry sources says the State is claiming that the remaining 5 supporters remain under the Maximum Security Wing at the Mile II State Prisons which creates enough room for conjecture and validates earlier reports that at least, Solo Sandeng and three others may have been killed by their torturers.

As we went to press, President Yaya Jammeh remains cowed in his palace while his gang of security bandits and spineless enablers, continue to fabricate tales and theories to sell to an already terrorized population and a totally apprehensive international community.
